Lack of New Clusters of COVID-19 at FSU a Good Sign
posted by Brittany Doss | September 4, 2020 | In NewsOn September 3, Chancellor Peggy Valentine released a statement informing FSU’s campus of the lack of new COVID-19 cases. This may come as a relief as two weeks ago, Chancellor Valentine reported a cluster stemming from the university’s apartments, and the outbreaks of numerous clusters at other UNC system schools.
Chancellor Valentine expressed that she is “grateful to all who have supported safe practices in reducing transmission on our campus.”
Further, Governor Roy Cooper has progressed with his three-phase plan to reopen North Carolina. We are now in phase 2.5. With this, after 5 p.m. today, more places such as bowling allies (30%), museums and aquariums (50%), and gyms and fitness studios (30%) will now be open to operate at limited capacities. Playgrounds will also be open.
Now, it is important that everyone remains steadfast and continue to practice social distancing, sanitizing, and wearing masks around the campus (and beyond). Chancellor Valentine stressed, “as we enter the Labor Day weekend, please remember that the virus is still out there.”
We have been cautioned that in addition to COVID-19, we are entering the influenza season. Per the chancellor, there will be an “[investigation of] the feasibility of offering flu shots to all students and employees at FSU.” Communication on this will be continued after the weekend.
Though we may be excited to explore the freedom we are regaining, it is essential that we keep in mind that together we can slow the spread. Let’s continue to do our part by being Bronco Smart and lead the community by example in following the Three Ws: Wear a cloth face covering, Wait 6 feet apart and avoid close contact, and Wash your hands often or use sanitizer.
