NFL Week 3: 49ers Stars Shine in Home Opener, Chiefs Defense dominant in 17-9 win
posted by Zaire Jones | September 26, 2023 | In News, SportsAfter starting with road wins over the Pittsburgh Steelers and LA Rams, The San Francisco 49ers opened their doors for the first time this year against the New York Giants.
Second-year Quarterback Brock Purdy, Christian McCaffery, George Kittle and Deebo Samuel were the catalysts on offense for the 49ers. Purdy finished the night off with 310 passing yards, 2 touchdowns and no interceptions. Christian McCaffery would have 85 rushing yards along with 34 receiving yards. George Kittle and Deebo Samuel had a solid game with 90 receiving yards and 129 receiving yards and a touchdown respectively.
On the other side of the ball, the Niners defense shut down the Giants offense all night. Outside of the first drive and a penalty-filled drive in the 3rd quarter, the Giants could not sustain any drives. It did not help that the star running back for the Giants, Saquon Barkley, was injured in last week’s game against Arizona with a high ankle sprain.
The 49ers are off to a great start to the season with a 3-0 record. The Niners will stay home to go against the winless Cardinals next Sunday. As for the Giants, the road does not get any easier as they go back home on a Monday Night against the Seattle Seahawks.
Chiefs Defense dominant in 17-9 win over Jaguars, Improve to 1-1
After dropping their season opener to the Detroit Lions, Kansas City went to Jacksonville and came away with the win. The defense was huge in this road win for K.C.
It helped that star defensive tackle, Chris Jones, made his return to the lineup. Jones and the Chiefs were in a holdout situation throughout camp, which was resolved a couple days after the season opener. He did not seem to lose a step at all, as he made the Chiefs look like a top unit. Whenever the Jaguars got towards the redzone, they were shut down as they would have to settle for field goals.
On the offensive side for the Chiefs, it was not a fast start for Patrick Mahomes and crew. The offense was stalled out by good defense and false start penalties. The Chiefs had 3 turnovers in the game, two forced fumbles and an interception. It wasn’t until the 3rd Quarter that the Chiefs would find ground on offense. The run game helped as Isiah Pacheco had some key finishing with 70 rushing yards on the game. Mahomes was able to find his main targets in the passing game with Travis Kelce and Skyy Moore getting the only 2 touchdowns in the game.
This was a needed win for this KC team after dropping their first game at home. The Chiefs will now return home, with a meeting with the 0-2 Chicago Bears on Sunday afternoon. Meanwhile the Jags will try to avenge this loss against a division foe at home next week, as they welcome the 0-2 Texans and rookie C.J. Stroud on Sunday.
