Officer in George Floyd Case Found Guilty
posted by Victoria Walker | April 23, 2021 | In NewsAlmost 11 months after George Floyd’s death, officer Derek Chauvin has been found guilty. Chauvin is known for being the officer who knelt on Floyd’s neck for more than 9 minutes last year. The death of Floyd sparked more Black Lives Matter protests across the nation and would become one of the biggest civil rights protests the country has seen in years.
On Tuesday April 20, Chauvin was convicted of second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter. The decision was made after a two-day deliberation within his jury.
According to CNN, the second-degree murder said Chauvin assaulted Floyd with his knee causing an unintentional death. They also said the third-degree charge said the officer acted with a “deprived mind” and the manslaughter charge was for his “culpable negligence.”
All of Chauvin’s charges could carry a total of 75 years in prison with his second-degree murder charge alone having a maximum sentence of 40 years.
After the verdict was announced, many high profile people began to release statements of their support in the jury decision, including President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
The president called the case a step forward, and then went on to say in a phone call with the family of George Floyd that “nothing can ever bring their brother, their father back, but this can be a giant step forward in the march towards justice in America.”’
