Opinion: Is TikTok Really a Threat?
posted by Tanna Gillis | March 26, 2024 | In News, OpinionPeople of all backgrounds and walks of life are buzzing as there is a threat to one of the most popular social media sites. With the House of Representatives passing a bill requiring TikTok’s parent company Bytedance to sell, the social media platform becoming banned in the United States becomes a very real possibility.
TikTok has become a place of self-expression and entertainment for many – some of whom even make a living by posting their content. Whether you are creating videos or simply scrolling, there is something for everyone. This app has opened up conversations about a plethora of topics that people simply have not had and/or not felt comfortable having in the past. There are videos that talk about racism, politics, foreign and domestic issues, parenthood, childhood trauma, health and wellness, and so much more. And polls show public opinion is divided on the ban: with only 31% of Americans in favor of the ban (opposition is at 35% and 31% have no opinion on the subject), according to the Associated Press. While it is still necessary to factcheck what you see on TikTok, the idea of banning an application that has provided so much meaningful insight to the people in this country feels scary.
It is hard not to assume the worst about this situation. The American people, as well as people from other countries, have found a voice on TikTok. People are sharing experiences and ideas and thinking for themselves, rather than basing their views strictly on what the mainstream media feeds them. It is almost as if the government feels threatened by this. The proposed ban is based on privacy and security concerns regarding our government.
But is TikTok really the biggest threat to our nation’s success and well-being right now?
