Opinion: It’s Valentine’s Day, And You’re Single. Let’s Unpack This
posted by Kayla Mady | February 13, 2024 | In News, OpinionOkay, so Valentine’s Day is coming up, and you feel some type of way about celebrating it alone. I know the feeling. For years, I always hated not having someone to spend it with … but the truth is, I had many options. It took some time for me to realize, but it is a day of LOVE. You don’t just need a partner to celebrate that.
Love is felt and expressed in many ways and for more than just ONE person in your life. You don’t have to sit over a tub of Neapolitan ice cream this year crying to ‘The Notebook,’ ‘Titanic,’ ‘Poetic Justice,’ or ‘Sylvie’s Love’ … not that I do that.
Instead, you could have as many Valentines as you want, and be appreciated by those you love, kind of love, or don’t even know what to call the relationship (oh, you’re messy!).
Here’s a list of activities you can try this Valentine’s Day as a single person!
- Host a Dinner Party!
Just because you are single does not mean you have to dine alone on V-Day. Call up some friends and family and get together to enjoy a meal. Nothing stops you from putting up some corny red and pink décor, setting up an array of food, and grubbing out with the people you care about. (Heck … you know you want to invite your sneaky link.)
- Attend a random class alone or with a friend!
Need some ideas? If you are active, boxing, cycling, Pilates, yoga, dance, or pole fitness classes could be fun! Would you prefer something laid-back? You have options like pop/wine & paint, pottery, cooking, or photography classes that could be fun!
- Try a new recipe!
Okay, you opted out of fun activities and decided to stuff your face and cry. (I do that even if it isn’t Valentine’s Day.) Now, it’s time to make some random complicated recipe you found on Pinterest. But remember to always have something simple as a backup in case you and/or your companion(s) couldn’t pull off being Gordon Ramsey in the kitchen. Once that is done, consume your feelings in calories. It’s okay, babe, I’m not judging.
- Self-care time! Pamper yourself!
Honestly, use Valentine’s Day to become a baddie. Fellas, you too can be a baddie. Pull out the tweezers, the skin care, the masks, the wax machines, whatever you got. It’s good to take the day to revitalize yourself. Self-love is the best form of love you can give yourself!
- Visit a new bar! (or) Become a bartender! (21+)
Hey … I don’t blame you for needing a little drink. You’re single. I GET IT. Have you heard about a new bar? Or have a new drink you want to try? Get dressed up, go out OR, buy what you need, and get shakin’ at home. Make a good elixir to solve the loneliness. One or two should suffice. Cause, yes, boo, that is Michael B. Jordan sitting on your couch.
- Plan a small getaway!
Whether you pack up and leave town, get a room at a hotel five minutes up the street, or walk one dorm over with a sleeping bag, sometimes getting out of your usual space is a good way to forget what day it is!
- BE BOLD!
FINE. You are single this Valentine’s Day. Boo Hoo. Use that to your advantage. Ask someone out to dinner. A movie. Go on a walk in a park together. MAKE A MOVE. Do this, and maybe next year you won’t feel so lonely!
Overall, this day is NOT just for couples. You & I can enjoy it too. I hope I inspired some of you salty singles (me).
Happy Valentine’s Day, XOXO,
Kayla Mady
