Opinion: The Benefits of COVID
posted by Shania Ingram | October 30, 2020 | In News, OpinionThe COVID-19 pandemic brought with it several benefits. It sounds absurd because we tend to spend majority of our time evaluating the negative outcomes it created. While millions of people lost loved ones, had pay cuts and were depressed, there are others whose lives have benefitted from the changes this disease created.
One of the most precious commodities that we all received was time. We are often bombarded with the demands of 9-5 work schedules, extracurricular school activities and the monotonous nature of our daily routines. When the world was put on pause, we were given the opportunity to breath, replenish, refocus and rebuild.
Families could focus on spending much more valuable time together and create more memories. Student-athletes could transfer this surplus of time and energy into other passions apart from sports. Business owners had to think more creatively about entrepreneurship ideas.
Though the family dynamic, job title and interests of everyone may differ, there was no excuse for not having an opportunity to experience some type of growth. With all the time on our hands, we were no longer trying to “make time” for what was important because we already had it in large amounts.
People who never thought they had time to learn to cook, start a YouTube channel or write a book became experts at the task within a matter of months. Others were able to use social media as a tool to discover and sharpness their talents. Instead of facing the usual hustle-and-bustle of life, we had the chance of making positive contributions to the lives of others.
Come to think of it, there are so many other chaotic events that were avoided simply because no one could leave their houses. A moment of disconnection from our tight schedules and a moment of connection to God and our families is exactly what many of us needed.
