Skate Jam Raises Money For Moore County Skatepark
posted by James Winbush | April 16, 2024 | In Arts and Culture, NewsOn April 6, N2 Flow skate shop hosted a skate jam for the Skaters for Moore initiative. The Skaters for Moore initiative are dedicated to raising money to build a new skatepark for Moore County.
As skateboarding is rising in popularity in the state of North Carolina, there seems to be a lack of skateparks for the Moore County area. Most people who live in the area have young children and teenagers who need a place to skate. Most skaters have been skating in empty tennis courts, basketball courts, churches, parking lots, and school buildings. Usually, skaters are only able to skate at these spots for 20-30 minutes before they are removed from the premise by local authorities. For skaters who have access to a car they will drive to Rowan Skatepark in Fayetteville.
Patrick Blue, who is the manager for N2 Flow skate shop, currently runs the GoFundMe account for Southern Pines Skatepark Fundraising Drive.
“Kids need a place to skate and hangout to keep them safe and out of trouble. A lot of kids are just skating around anywhere they can find a spot, however, most of time, they are kicked out by local authorities because local businesses and schools don’t want to be responsible for any injuries, and skateboarding can cause damages to these local locations,” Park said.
The Skaters for Moore initiative is trying to reach their goal of $350,000 dollars to have a skatepark built at Memorial Park in Southern Pines. At the time of publication, the initiative has raised over $90,000 dollars. The initiative recently applied for two promise grants that will hopefully cover the rest of the money needed to build the park.
If the initiative can reach its goal the park will be built by Stoak City, a company based out in Raleigh that design and build skateparks. They also host events and create media for the skateboard scene in North Carolina.
At the event, N2 Flow skate shop was selling shoes, t-shirts, and jackets to help raise funds for the initiative. For the event they were selling everything at 50% percent off. The event also had local vendors out there that were donating most of the proceeds to the Skaters for Moore initiative, including churros from Churro Makin, Me Crazy food truck.
