The Fayetteville State University women’s softball team split their divisional doubleheader against Shaw University on Friday, April 24th on Sanders Field at Seabrook Park. FSU dropped game one 7-5, but rebounded with a 7-1 victory in game two.

In game one, freshman catcher Shi-Cara Goins smashed a single to deep left field to bring home freshman shortstop Kortni Adams and junior centerfielder Alex Wickham.

Freshman pitcher Carley Green suffered the loss on the mound pitching six of seven innings played. Sophomore pitcher Skyler Peebles checked in to pitch in the sixth inning.

Each team produced three runs in the sixth inning; including a 2-RBI double to the left side by Goins. FSU unraveled in the seventh inning, allowing three hits and three runs. The Lady Bears had a big hit to right center to bring in two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning, allowing the Lady Bears to grab the win.DSC_0014

In the second game, The Lady Broncos loaded the bases in the bottom of the third inning. Green, Wickham, and sophomore pitcher Zoe Howard all hit singles to advanced on base. Goins hit a sacrifice shot to score Green and tie the game 1-1.

Junior outfielder Shae Barnes scored in the fourth point off an error by Shaw University’s catcher. FSU broke the game open with four runs scored in the fifth inning. Sophomore third baseman Rebekah Reep racked up three RBIs with a double to deep right field.

Shaw went scoreless and hitless in the sixth and seventh innings. The Lady Broncos added a run in the sixth to account for the 7-1 final score.

Pitcher Zoe Howard earned the victory in game two. She pitched the complete game with six strikeouts and only four hits and one run allowed. The Lady Broncos move to 15-11 overall, 10-4 in the CIAA, and 5-3 in the CIAA Southern Division.
