Sports News Round Up: Sept. 25 – Oct. 1

On September 25, Fayetteville State University’s women’s volleyball team lost in a 3-set sweep against Elizabeth City State University. The loss has left FSU Volleyball with 5 wins and 8 losses. Elizabeth City currently has 10 wins and 6 losses. The Broncos will face off against Johnson C. Smith University away on Monday, October 3 at 6pm.
On September 26, the FSU men’s golf team won the Farmers Insurance HBCU DII Championship. FSU shot a combined 894 (+42) to win the title. The golf teams’ next tournament is the Richard Rendleman Invitational on Monday, October 3 in Salisbury, North Carolina.
On September 29, FSU football had a close win—13 to 10—at home against the Chowan University Hawks. It’s the Broncos’ third season win and second win against a team in the CIAA conference. The current season’s score is three wins and two losses. The Broncos’ defense won the game forcing five turnovers. RB Syheam McQueen got his first career touchdown in the first quarter after a fumble from Chowan. According to the FSU Athletic Department, McQueen said: “Scoring my first career touchdown in college was amazing… I need to feel that energy every game.” FSU’s next football game is the homecoming week game against the St. Augustine Falcons on October 8 at 2pm.
NBA News
The NBA preseason has started with some international games with the defending champions, the Golden State Warriors, traveling to Japan for preseason. The games were held at the Saitama Super Arena just north of Tokyo, Japan. They went against the Washington Wizards for both games, winning both 96 to 87 and 104 to 95, respectively.
Center James Wiseman led the Warriors in scoring with 20 points in the first game on September 30. Wiseman also had 9 rebounds in 24 minutes of play. Japan’s own player, Rui Hachimura—who plays for the Washington Wizards—led the Wizards’ scoring with 13 points and 9 rebounds in 25 minutes of action.
During the second game played on Sunday, October 2, the Warrior’s point guard, Stephen Curry, demonstrated his ability with 17 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists in just 17 minutes of play. For the Wizards, one of their key players, power forward and center Kristaps Porzingis, led his team with 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 2 assists in 22 minutes.
There are more NBA preseason international games on the books. The Atlanta Hawks and Milwaukee Bucks will face each other in 2 games in Abu Dhabi on October 6 and 8. Also, for the regular season, the San Antonio Spurs and Miami Heat will play in Mexico City on December 17. The Chicago Bulls and the Detroit Pistons will face each other in the near future on January 19 in Paris.

Coming off the international break, league play resumed around the world this past week. In the English Premier League, the weekend presented historic rivalries: Spurs vs. Arsenal and Manchester City vs. Manchester United.
Arsenal vs. Tottenham Spurs
For the famous North London Derby, it was a very controversial game played between the two rivals. As the score ended 1-1 at halftime, everything changed in the second half with a red card that sent off Spurs player, Emerson Royal. The defender tackled an opposing player’s ankle but to the surprise of the crowd, did not receive a hard penalty. Nevertheless, it put the Spurs down to just 10 players allowing Arsenal to take advantage and dominate the rest of the game. Score ended 3-1 to Arsenal which puts them top of the league table and keeps the Spurs at third with their first loss in the Premier League.
Manchester City vs. Manchester United
For the famous Manchester rivalry, it was a resounding one-sided game with lots of goals. Midfielder Phil Foden opened the scoring in the eighth minute and scored again in the forty-fourth minute, just before halftime. Man City’s star striker, Erling Haaland, was very much involved scoring back-to-back goals in the thirty-fourth and thirty-seventh minute. At halftime, Manchester United was being outplayed with the score being 4 to 0. In the second half, Manchester United started to claw back with a goal from Antony—who goes by one name—in in the fifty-sixth minute. Man Utd’s forward, Anthony Martial, was active as well scoring in the eighty-fourth minute and another from a late penalty in stoppage time. Though it wasn’t enough to beat Manchester City, with both Foden and Haaland getting hattricks to finish the game. Final score for the match was 6-3 in Manchester City’s favor.
