Caribbean Nights: Mr. and Miss Fayetteville State University Pageant 2023
posted by Nicholas Robinson-Carter | May 2, 2023 | In NewsOn April 22 the Division of Student Affairs Office of Student Activities & Engagements held the 31st Miss FSU Scholarship Pageant and 20th Mr. Fayetteville State University Competition. The event took place in the Seabrook Auditorium at 6 p.m. The theme for the pageant was Caribbean Nights.
The program began with an opening number introducing the candidates running for the crown of Mr. and Miss FSU for 2023-2024 academic year. Dressed up in yellow Hawaiian shirts with a white top, red pants, and white shoes the two gentlemen running for Mr. FSU were nursing major Jalon McAllister-Smith and business administration major Michael Woodley-Chapman. Dressed up in red dresses with beaded necklaces, bracelets, and heels, the five ladies running for Miss FSU were music education major NaCosha Hammock, race & public health major Iyana Beachem, chemistry major and current Miss FSU Asia Hammock, political science major Niayah McFadden, nursing major Jayla Herring, and political science major Jadelyn Velasquez.
The pageant was divided up into four categories: fitness and athletic wear, talent, on-stage knowledge and awareness, and formal wear.
In the fitness and athletic wear, McAllister-Smith wore a golf outfit with golf club, Woodley-Chapman wore a blue polo shirt with khaki pants and a blue bowling ball, NaCosha Hammock wore a softball outfit in blue with a bat, Beachem wore a tennis outfit, Asia Hammock wore a blue swimsuit, McFadden wore a basketball outfit in blue of course, Herring had on a volleyball attire, and Velasquez had on a soccer outfit with a soccer ball.
In between the contest there two entertainments. The first one was sophomore arts and music education major Avanti Akpan singing “Higher” by Tems and junior business and administration major Alanna Leonard did a dance to Rhianna’s hit “Diamonds.”
Next category for the competition was talent. McAllister-Smith did a contemporary dance piece to Cynthia Erivo’s “Stand Up” from the movie Harriet, Woodley-Chapman performed a monologue, NaCosha Hammock played “Weak” by SWV on her Trombone, Beachem performed a lyrical dance to Rhianna’s “Lift Me Up,” Asia Hammock tap danced to Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” McFadden did a creative praise interpretation piece to “Yes” by Shekinah Glory Ministry, Herring sang a song made famous by Billie Holliday, “God Bless the Child,” and Velasquez performed a monologue using both English and Spanish.
On-stage knowledge and awareness was the second to last category before the crowning of Mr. and Miss FSU. Each of the candidates were dressed in business attire and senior advisor to the Chancellor Mr. Jeffery Womble read aloud the questions that the candidates answered before entering in the contest, and they had to answer what was being said. The questions varied from “What was it like to have come to Fayetteville State University?” to “If chosen, how would he or she help implement changes to what goes on campus and for the community?”
During the program, the FSU Dance Ensemble performed a rendition Rhianna’s Super Bowl LVII halftime performance which was right after intermission.
The last contest of the night was the formal wear. Each candidate dressed up in their evening wear attire while walking across the stage with their bios read aloud. McAllister-Smith had on a black and white suit, Woodley-Chapman wore a blue suit jacket with a white dress shirt that had bowtie and black pants, NaCosha Hammock wore a shimmery pant-suit, Beachem had on a vibrant pink gown, Asia Hammock wore a white gown, McFadden wore a white and silver gown with a flowy cape on the back, Herring had on a white gown that had blue drape down the floor, and Velasquez wore a turquoise shiny gown.
Before announcing the next Mr. & Miss FSU, the 2022-2023 Royal Court appeared to the stage. The Royal Court composed of class Kings and Queens. Next, there was a farewell video and walk to our Mr. Fayetteville State University 2022-2023 Issaiah McLean.
Finally, the presentation of awards: Beachem received two awards for both talent and formal wear. NaCosha Hammock, Herring, and Velasquez received flowers for their participation in the pageant, Herring also received an award for her singing talent. Asia Hammock received an award for her fitness and athletic wear, and McFadden had received an award for her creative interpretation performance that had the crowd cheering.
Asia Hammock received second runner-up and both Woodley-Chapman and McFadden received first runner-up.
Finally, it was time to announce the winner of the pageant, your new Mr. Fayetteville State University 2023-2024 goes to Jalon McAllister Smith. The new Miss Fayetteville State University 2023-2024 was Iyana Beachem.
