Tennis Team’s Road To New Beginnings
posted by Amber Gladden | October 3, 2018 | In SportsThis year’s Fayetteville State University’s Women’s Tennis Team, is looking forward to a very successful season with four returning players and an addition of five freshmen.
The tennis team has been practicing, conditioning, and weightlifting, every day at 6:30 a.m. to prepare for this year’s season. They have also been working on building confidence, and the psychological side too tennis.
At least once a month they try to meet with two therapists too focus in mentally on what can help them to play better, and help them with balancing school and tennis.
Head Coach Erika Harris has put in extra work to build a strong foundation for not only the present but the future of FSU tennis as well.
Last season, FSU’s tennis team struggled to win matches due to lack of players and especially lack of experienced players but still had a decent season. The team consisted of four volleyball players, a basketball player, and three returners from the previous year.
Their record was 5-10 overall but a nice 5-7 in the conference. Though they have faced many problems during the season the ladies held their own pretty well.
However, FSU’s tennis team is on to bigger and better things this year. “We have a lot more enthusiasm, we’ve got a lot more talent, and a lot more cohesiveness, and that is a recipe for success,” said Coach Harris.
Coach Harris also went on to explain, to be better for this next season she is holding her players accountable this year for themselves and each other.
It is all a part of keeping the team on the same page and creating unity early in the season.
Returning junior Brittany Doss said, “I’m expecting to continue to build our new legacy and we have the potential to leave a lasting impression this year. We’ve definitely been turning some heads, this season we are going to drop jaws!”
In addition, freshmen Lauryn Clark explained that being a student athlete is hard but with such supportive coaches and teammates it makes the college life easier for her.
The tennis team will be playing in several fall matches too prepare for their first season opener in the spring on February 9, 2019. They will be playing against Methodist University at 2 p.m.
The tennis team is on the road to new beginnings and looking for all the support from their fellow Fayetteville State University Broncos.
