Opinion: Unethical Practices at FSU
posted by Victoria Walker | September 20, 2021 | In News, OpinionOn September 8, The News and Observer revealed that a state auditor report showed Fayetteville State University was found to be making “unethical financial moves.”
In a report released by the Office of State Auditor, Beth Wood, made 35 allegations which were primarily focusing on “fraud, waste, and abuse.” The allegations centered on landscape management contracts that were not approved through proper university policy channels.
The allegations in this report were not brought to the attention of students and even some faculty and staff.
This story was reported again on September 15 in The Fayetteville Observer. In it, they say that Chancellor Darrell Allison responded to the report.
According to the Fayetteville Observer, Chancellor Allison said that the policies were not followed and policies should be reviewed as needed. However, he also denied that the actions taken by the vice chancellor who made those deals was unethical.
Chancellor Allison told the Fayetteville Observer: “The University’s internal review does not conclude that any ethical or integrity issues were involved in the way the contract was executed.”
Again, no notification was released to the students at Fayetteville State University. Although Chancellor Allison is quick to get in front of anything to announce and boast his many accomplishments to the students thus far. He has not been quick to announce something that reflects our university in this light.
As students we ask for transparency. We asked for it with COVID numbers, Homecoming and much more, and this should be no different.
Why was this so hushed if there is nothing to hide? Why not bring this to the attention of people who pay to attend this institution? If anything, this leads us to wonder what else could the university be keeping from us?
The Voice reached out for a comment from the university on this article and has not received a response at the time of publication
