Women’s Empowerment Expo Embraces Female Unity and Career Diversity
posted by Nicholas Robinson-Carter | September 26, 2022 | In Arts and Culture, NewsOn September 17, women from various parts of North Carolina came together to celebrate career diversity and women empowerment at the inaugural Women’s Empowerment Expo in Dunn, North Carolina.
Local indie author, Sabrena Montora Robinson, held a book signing at the event hosted by Jacqueline Harris and the Virtual Business Group at the Dunn Community Center.
Dr. Kathleen Coates, a clinical audiologist and owner of Coates Hearing Clinic in Smithfield, North Carolina, spoke at the event. Dr. Coates spoke about hearing and provided interesting ways to take care and be aware of the signs of hearing loss.
Poet Brenda Waddion recited her poem entitled “The Woman I am.” While reciting, Waddion held five folding fans, with words displayed on the back of each. She used the fans during her recitation to a establish a broader message.
Other events included “Dress for Success,” which was a fashion show on how to dress for an interview both in person and on Zoom.
Robinson spoke on the impact of domestic violence including the story about her cousin’s death by domestic violence. She primarily writes women’s fiction, stories and poems.
Born in Camden, NJ, Robinson has resided in North Carolina for most of her adult life. She possesses bachelor’s degree in creative writing from Southern New Hampshire University.
Robinson also discussed her two books: Nine Months to Life, which was released in 2008 and signed copies of her second book, Nadine, which came out in 2021. Her first book tells the story of a surrogate mother, while her latest is about a survivor of domestic violence.
“Domestic violence is a touchy subject; however, it must be heard,” Robinson said. “It does not matter race, gender, religion, social or economic status. Domestic abuse still happens.”
Robinson has a third book coming out in Summer 2023 called, The Diver. Nadine is currently available on Amazon, at Barnes & Nobles, and her website sabrenamontorarobinson.com.
The event concluded with giveaways and prizes from each of the vendors, as well as final remarks from the organizer Jacqueline Harris. Harris intends to host the event again next year.
