Word on The Street

Shakieviea Gilchrist took to the streets of campus to find out what the American Dream means to students.

She says, “I hope that your definition of The American Dream sets the tone for your life long goals. It doesn’t have to be a white picket fence with a red door or a two story classic house, but let it be whatever makes you happy and fulfills your dreams. Happy Black History Month.”

Dajah Johnson: “My definition of the American Dream I would say is to be happy, and to be able to live and pay your bills while also having someone to share it with. You don’t have to be rich, famous, or anything of that sort in order to live your life and live the American dream.”

VOI02051404NNick Vereene: “To be honest, I don’t believe in the American Dream. Being a young African American male, our dream is being successful and making means without selling drugs and doing anything illegal. The ultimate goal is to just make your family proud. Going off to college or joining the military is our way of pretty much surviving. It’s no white picket fence for us, sadly. It can be, but you have to be the typical lawyers or doctors-even rappers can reach this goal. My American dream is living comfortably with a wife and kids with hopes of not getting shot or going to jail.”
