Aaron Rodgers Traded to the New York Jets
posted by Trever Lloyd | May 1, 2023 | In SportsAfter almost two years of rumors swirling around about possible trade and retirement of the long-time Green Bay Packers quarterback, Aaron Rodgers has officially been traded to the New York Jets. This is the end of Rodgers’s 18-year career in Lambeau.
Rodgers and Green Bay’s office has been clashing for the better part of two years now with the front office upset with Rodgers’s attitude and inability to get the Packers back to a Super Bowl, seemingly unable to deliver in big moments in playoff games. Rodgers has been frustrated about the lack of capital invested in the team, especially in the wide receiver position. Rogers also has felt disrespected by the team after they took quarterback Jourdan Love in the first round of the 2020 draft to eventually take his job.
The team’s succession plan was to play Love when they felt he was ready and Rodgers’s play dipped, but this was delayed when the quarterback won two regular season MVPs in 2020 and 2021.
In 2022, Rodgers however had one of his very worst years statistically as a pro. He had his second-worst year when it came to interceptions, tossing 12, one away from his career high 13, to only 26 touchdowns, which is his lowest output.
The compensation for this trade includes the teams switching first-round draft pick positions (Green Bay moves to selecting 13th overall from the 15th spot overall), a 2024 second-round pick that turns into a first-round pick if Rodgers plays half the season.
With this trade the Packers finally get to see what they have in Love, who is coming into his fourth year in the league but this will be his first year actually starting the season as QB1.
The Jets, who boast an elite defense and solid offensive playmakers, finally get a franchise quarterback even if it might be a two-year rental. With the addition of Rodgers, the Jets should be considered a playoff contender. The only remaining question for the Jets is how long until Rodgers eventually does decide to retire and what will become of 3rd year quarterback Zach Wilson, who the Jets took third overall in the 2020 draft as the former BYU product has struggled since he’s come into the league with maturity and turnover issues.
