Broncos Come Back From the Dead and Win OT
posted by Trevor Lloyd | November 21, 2023 | In SportsThe Fayetteville State University Broncos had a day to remember on November 4 in a game that created a roller coaster of emotions. The lows included being down 24-7, but the highs were being on the winning side of amazing comeback. Winston Salem State University gave FSU all they could handle.
On the first drive of the game, the Rams slashed and gashed the Bronco defense on a six-play drive that was capped off with a WSSU two-yard rushing touchdown by running back Asa Barnes, as the Rams jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead.
The Broncos offense got the ball back but suffered a quick three and out.
The Rams took over, and again started driving down the field, making it all the way down to the Broncos 9-yard line. However, the Broncos defense buckled down and forced the Rams to settle for a 26-yard field goal by Jobanni Esparza, making the score 10-0.
The Broncos looked to respond, but on third and 10 the Rams intercepted. Starting from the 35-yard line, the Rams took advantage of the excellent field position, and Rams quarterback Daylin Lee found R.J. Mobley for 15 yards. Then, running back Noah Marshall ripped off a 15-yard run before powering his way into the endzone for a one-yard touchdown, making the score 17-0.
Then, the Broncos finally got a much needed spark from the special teams unit. Barry Elliott had a 64 yard return from the kick-off. The Broncos capitalized, scoring a quick touchdown when Joe Owens found Kameron King for a four-yard touchdown. The Broncos cut the score to 17-7.
The Rams offense however weren’t just going to let FSU back in the game. Lee launched a 55-yard bomb to Kaleb Washington for a touchdown to close out the first quarter to extend the Rams’ lead to 24-7.
In the second quarter, the Broncos were able to cut down WSSU’s lead when Owens tossed a touchdown to Maliq Staten, and Jacob Meneses hitting on a pair of field goals, which brought the score to 24-20 before halftime.
Coming out of halftime with momentum on their side, the Broncos were able to take their first lead of the day with a Derrick Alston Jr. touchdown, giving FSU a three-point lead at 27-24.
WSSU, however, retied the game towards the end of the third quarter with a field goal.
FSU retook the lead in the fourth quarter with a touchdown by Julian Milligan. The Rams quickly answered, however, when Lee found Qamar Grant for a touchdown.
The game clock hit zero with the game tied at 34-all. In overtime, the Broncos defense, however, stepped up and forced a critical fumble, when Shi Gaskin came up with a strip sack on Lee, recovered by Brian Grier setting the Broncos offense up at the Rams’ 25-yard line. Three plays later Milligan delivered the final knockout punch with a 12-yard run up the middle for a touchdown to give FSU the come-from-behind victory.
