FSU Tennis Builds on Last Year’s Momentum
posted by Amber Gladden | March 27, 2019 | In SportsThe Fayetteville State University tennis team has started off the season strong with record of 4-4 and a nice 3-2 in conference play. The Broncos fell short against the number one team, Shaw University, in the conference on Tuesday March 19.
So far, Fayetteville State has beaten Bowie State University (5-2), Elizabeth City State University (6-1), and Virginia Union University (70). The Broncos are not the same team as they were last year, but better.
Coach Erika Harris started out with five players, and now she has a team of nine players with five of those players being freshmen. She has set a strong foundation for this season and for the future.
Freshmen Arnisha Cosby from Washington, D.C has set the tone for the Broncos with a record of 6-2, playing the number 2 position in singles. Cosby has a record of 3-1 overall in conference play. Following Cosby is sophomore Kayla Williams from Fayetteville, NC with a record 4-3 record and a 2-2 record in the conference. Williams also received the Rookie of the Year award last season. Williams is a very mobile player and has been moved around to different positions this season, such as positions 3, 4, and 6.
Jayla Wooten, a freshman from Winterville, NC, has been having a great season with a record of 3-1 in singles and 5-1 in doubles. She has alternated between positions 4 and 5 with a record of 3-0 at position at position 5 and losing one match at position 4.
Zyaja Mattocks is a sophomore who has played at position number 6 most of the season holding a nice record of 2-2 in the CIAA.
Sydney Harris, a freshman from Fayetteville, NC, is mostly a doubles player. She has been partnering with freshman teammate Lauryn Clark from Rocky Mount, NC this season. The two hold a record of 4-4 and in singles Harris is 2-0 and Clark has a record of 3-5.
The Broncos were supposed to compete against the Johnson C. Smith Bulldogs on Thursday, March 21, but the match was postponed due to inclement weather. On March 28, 2019, the Broncos will host a match against Winston Salem State Univeristy at at 2 p.m.
