Broncos Take Care Of Business On Senior Night
posted by Trevor Lloyd | February 27, 2024 | In News, SportsSenior Night is an event that any sports fan feels bittersweet about. The sad reality sets in as we sadly must watch our seniors depart and play their final game in the stadium they have called their home for years. On the other, it is a thank you and final celebration send-off to our seniors for everything they have done for their school, team, and community.
On February 17, your FSU men’s Broncos basketball team gave everyone in attendance at Capel Arena a reason to celebrate with a 25-point win over the Livingstone Blue Bears. While the 75-50 final score indicates a blowout, this game was a dogfight from the moment tipoff occurred. .
While the Broncos never trailed during the game, they were not able to pull away early as the first half saw many turnovers and fouls for both teams. Active hands and aggressive, pesky defense made it hard for either team to catch a rhythm and truly get going. It was not until seven minutes left in the first half that the Broncos broke 20 points in the game. As the buzzer sounded for the first half, the Broncos took a 31-23 lead into the locker room.
Coming out from halftime, a switch flipped for both teams on the offensive side of the ball. The Blue Bears went on several runs to cut the lead down, but at every turn, the Broncos would step up with a clutch shot to close the door on Livingstone. Eventually, the Broncos’ offensive firepower became too much for Livingstone to handle and extended their lead to 17 points with a little over two minutes left in the game. Before the final zeros, senior Cedric Currie sent the arena into a frenzy with back-to-back bank shots that had the Broncos bench jumping out of their seats.
Caleb Simmons led the team with 19 points. Behind him was Tairell Fletcher coming up with 10 second-half points on his 14-point night. Kaleb Coleman had 10 points and just needed one more rebound to register a double-double. Khalil Ridges did a bit of everything with 5 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists. The Broncos will be back on the road on Feb. 28 as they take a trip to South Carolina to take on Claflin at the CIAA Tournament.
