Concerns Over Student Bus Passes
posted by Brandon Owens | October 3, 2018 | In NewsStudents are concerned here at Fayetteville State University over how the university is no longer offering its students free bus passes.
In recent years, students at Fayetteville State University have had access to bus passes that allowed transportation throughout Fayetteville via the city’s public bus system. Since Fayetteville State funded this service, these passes came free of charge to students (unless a replacement pass was needed) and were very convenient to them. This service was offered for the past 3 ½ years.
If a student wanted to get a pass for this year however, they would be out of luck as the university is no longer offering them.
Greg Moyd, the assistant vice chancellor of student affairs, reported that the contract Fayetteville State University had with the city of Fayetteville for this service recently expired.
This has been the concern of several students and staff members at Fayetteville State. Casey Jones, a 22-year-old staff member of FSU said, “I think it’s a disadvantage because students who don’t have cars, don’t have any way to get anywhere. Without the bus pass or the student shuttle, students will have to pay for transportation, and they may have limited funds.”
A common concern with FSU no longer offering bus passes is that it causes inconveniences for its students. Christian Adams, a junior at FSU, also gives his opinions as he uses the city’s bus system to get around town safely. “I’m disappointed. Since I don’t drive, and I like to go downtown, I use the bus to get there.”
Even though FSU no longer offers the free bus passes, the city’s bus system is still available for students to utilize. The Fayetteville Area System of Transit provides discount passes for students. These passes costs $30 a month.
Other modes of transportation such as Zipcars and LimeBikes are also available. FSU staff member Willy Bradshaw commented, “We provide Zipcars and LimeBikes. With this and Uber people like to get where they want to go immediately. It’s all about convenience.”
