Learning Spanish, welcome to a world of opportunities
Having the ability to speak a second language is highly valued in today’s society. This can open the door to many job opportunities or we can simple do it just to impress our family and friends. Speaking a second language makes the world seem like a smaller place and allows us to communicate with people who do not speak our language.
This summer, I spent my vacation in Puerto Rico with my family. We were in a part of Puerto Rico called Isla Verde, Carolina. Our hotel was on the beach, away from the tourist center and close to the townspeople. Every morning, I walked along the beach and watched the natives surf the waves and play a sport that was like ping pong or table tennis but without the net. Also, I saw the dolphins, visited the Museum of Art of Puerto Rico, the San Cristobal Castle, and Old San Juan. And, although Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States, everyone did not speak English, the traffic signs were written in Spanish, and the menus at some of the restaurants where I ate did not have English translations.
During my trip I felt shy as I thought my Spanish was horrible. For this reason, I hesitated to use the Spanish I had learned in school. I did not want to offend anyone, but I happened to be the only person in my group that spoke and understood Spanish. Therefore, when necessary and despite my nerves and insecurity, I talked to people who, to my surprise, understood me perfectly. One thing I learned in Puerto Rico is that the natives of Puerto Rico and of other Spanish-speaking countries appreciate when someone makes an effort to communicate in their language.
In honor of Hispanic Heritage month, I want this article to be an incentive for people who lack the confidence to speak Spanish to do so. Use your skills at any available opportunity because, believe me, your Spanish is not as bad as you think. It is important to know that your effort is greatly appreciated, especially if you have the desire to travel. If you take a Spanish class, do your best and immerse yourself in the culture and language without fear.
