El temor de las fresas con agujas
posted by Zyeirah Younger | October 3, 2018 | In La VozMucha gente ama las fresas.
The Strawberry Needle Scare
Many people love strawberries. However, strawberries are putting more fear than joy in the hearts and minds of people. Out of nowhere, people in Australia began to find needles in their strawberries. At first, a man went to a hospital complaining of abdominal pain after eating some strawberries. Then, a chain reaction began, and people started posting photos and videos on social media of the needles they found in their newly purchased strawberries. One man has even reported that he had suffered serious injuries in his mouth after biting a strawberry. According to the police of New South Wales, people found needles in more than twenty baskets of strawberries and, also, in apples and bananas. More than one hundred cases of strawberries with needles were reported to the police in Queensland after the first incident. In other words, the problem is spreading.
According to Gulfnews, the Queensland police are not completely sure of the reason why someone would do this but have come to the common conclusion that it has been “obviously to hurt someone.” They also believe that a former disgruntled employee may be behind the problem, but they are still considering all possible suspects. As for the culprits, if found they could face charges for the crime of contamination and be sentenced to up to ten years in prison. However, this can change if more people are injured or if the threat increases.
A supermarket chain in New Zealand has completely removed from its shelves strawberries of the Australian brand Choice. According to CNN, on September 23, the supermarket chain Countdown said that strawberries were removed from its shelves as a “precautionary measure”. However, the supermarket chain also advises people who are still buying strawberries, to cut them before eating them.
On September 19th , the Australian Prime Minister stated the following: “It is not a joke, it is not funny, you are endangering the livelihood of Australian workers and scaring children.” In addition, the Australian government has officially ordered a federal investigation and officials are working hard to find the culprit.
