In a hard-fought race in Salem, Virginia, the Broncos started off their season just where they left off a couple years ago after having last year’s season canceled due to COVID-19, Fayetteville State University started off strong.
On championship day, it was going to be a tough task to accomplish another championship given the competition coming from Winston-Salem State University and Virginia State University.
FSU’s own Mercy Chemutai placed fourth out of 62 competitors and ran her best time of 20:57.
WSSU put up a strong fight in the beginning, having three of their runners finish in the top ten. Due to those finishes WSSU had a 19 to 4 lead over the Broncos.
Then FSU’s Destiny Stevons placed 11th, which gave FSU 15 points, then following right behind her was Sierra Beasely in 12th. Mya Johnson finished two spots later, while Aaliyah Saunders finished right after her and that completed the championship title quest.
The top 15 finishers all earn the honors of All-CIAA, which meant all the scoring runners for FSU all made the All-Conference team.
The men’s team finished sixth out of 10 teams that raced. Their finishes were 24 by Charles Pumbu and Jaylaan Poe finished 40. Then they had Christian Williams finish at 42 and Ivan Delgardo and David Riddy finished 43 and 58.
