Ice Me Out: FSU Shaved Ice Edition
posted by Brandon Owens | April 24, 2019 | In Arts and CultureEven though winter is behind us, students at Fayetteville State University are still keeping it cool as things warm up. The “Ice Me Out” event that took place April 16 saw the Rudolph Jones Student Center amphitheater filled with students eagerly waiting to received a shaved ice treat courtesy of Pelican Snowballs.
Dozens of students lined up as Pelican Snowballs owner Randy Smith worked quickly to fill cups with ice so customers can fill them with their choice of flavored syrups. Some used one flavor, others used multiple. A DJ played hip hop as students enjoyed their treats.
The event hosted by the Student Activities Committee proved rather popular. FSU junior and member of SAC Christina Bryant was to help students socialize and bring engagement within the community.
“Everyone came out today in their nice warm clothes, and we’re just celebrating with Icees and conversation while we sit around in the sun,” said Bryant. “It’s a break from studying and all the tests.”
The event was definitely a nice break from the daily routine students go through here at FSU.
Senior Darien Little elaborated on this by saying: “I really liked the event. It got everyone out their rooms on a nice day. It’s a little breezy, but it’s still nice. Music, Icees, and good vibes.” Little also felt that events such as this benefits the students because “everybody’s out and about. There is a lot of commotion about having nothing to do on campus, and this is a nice event to get everybody out their room on a nice day so we can enjoy each other.”
Although everyone did enjoy themselves, unfortunate circumstances ended the event prematurely. This was due to Smith running out of supplies, particularly cups.
“It was a prepaid event, so we finished what we had. It’s a shame that was the end of it,” Smith explained.
Despite this, the event had a great turnout. Smith even said that he would return to FSU. Future events are possible, with preparation and more supplies, of course.
