It’s a Three-Peat!
posted by Keyona Smith | November 21, 2019 | In SportsThe women’s cross country team of Fayetteville State University has taken the gold from the CIAA Championship at Green Hill Park in Salem, Virginia for a distinguished three times in a row. Led by head coach Inez Turner, recipient of CIAA 2019 Women’s Coach of the Year award, the runners continue to break records and set new standards.
With continuous progression over the course of the season, the women’s team started finding rhythm finishing in 6th place at the Roanoke Invitational in early September this year. Over the course of the following weeks, the women finished closer to the top, including third place in the N.C. State Adidas Meet. During the Invitational DII Division, the women seized first place, and the pen to history started to move for Coach Turner and her runners.
Over the course of the month, the team used their previous strides to position them to capture the podium at the Great American HBCU championships – a precursor to what the team would accomplish just weeks after in Salem, Virginia. Coach Turner said that she is not asking for them to do anything that they cannot accomplish.
“My team know the expectation is high because they are ready for it. They put the work in and showed us that they are ready,” Coach Turner said.
Nelly Kandie added that what was done the first two times of competition is still the standard. “The expectation is to go there and do what we usually do. Nothing is new to us. Just go and bring it home,” Kandie said about the championship trophy.
