108 and Counting
posted by Daniel Martin | April 6, 2017 | In SportsLet me throw a number out to everyone: 108. As we are well in the full swing of March Madness, I can’t help but wonder one thing, where is the love for UConn women’s basketball?
Let’s take a moment to see where we are as far as recent headlines: Tom Brady’s stolen Super Bowl game jersey was found in Mexico, another trial for embattled former tight end Aaron Hernandez is underway, and let’s not forget men’s basketball is underway.
In the past year, we have seen curses broken, unlikely champions crowned, and records destroyed. You couldn’t hear enough about if Golden State would reach 73 wins. The Cubs ended over 100 years of futility by winning the World Series.
Don’t get me started on the Tom Brady debacle and his four-game suspension for “Deflategate” that had people divided on if it was right or wrong.
Remember 108?
During all this time a team from Storrs, Connecticut is quietly making a case to be the greatest to team to play in any sport.
Here is a team on the cusp of winning their fifth straight championship. No team from any other team sport is near that at this present time. This is a team that hasn’t lost since November of 2014 to Stanford. The irony is that is that this the same team sandwiched their last winning streak that went 90 games.
You have to search for the news of what UConn is currently doing. Even on sports websites you have to search for this news. What bigger story is there right now than who is going to beat UConn?
It is time to start putting women’s sports on front pages and not just small blurbs or places you have to search for them. As a sports fan, I find it wrong to not emphasize a streak like this.
Remember 108.
You have the arguably the greatest coach in Geno Auriemma and arguably the greatest team ever and it seems to be ignored.
This winning streak is more than college football which is 47 set by Oklahoma, more than men’s college basketball which was 88 set by UCLA, and it is more than women’s soccer which is 103 and was set by North Carolina.
It is time to give credit where credit is due. We are seeing a streak that may never be matched once it comes to an end. It is time to stop ignoring impressive things accomplished in women’s sports.
Remember 108. By the end of the season, we may (and should) remember 112.
