Life After Hurricane Irma
In late August and early September 2017, several countries and some states of the United States were devastated by powerful hurricane Irma, one of the most devastating in history. This hurricane has been one of the strongest since Hurricane Dean in 2007. Irma was a category 5 hurricane with winds of up to 295 kilometers per hour. This powerful hurricane caused extreme damage across the Caribbean islands and the state of Florida.
Antigua and Barbuda are the islands that are located southeast of Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands, a sovereign state of the British Commonwealth since 1981. The economy of the islands depends on tourism and they were known for their beautiful beaches, rainforests and tourist resorts.
When the storm struck, Barbuda was one of the most affected islands. Fortunately, no lives were lost because there was a good evacuation plan in place to Antigua; but, the storm destroyed the island almost completely and the only thing left of many houses were pieces. “For the first time in more than 300 years, there are no people on the island of Barbuda,” said Ronald Sanders, the Antigua and Barbuda ambassador to the United States.
A week after the disaster, the people of Barbuda are still in despair, they will not be able to return to their cities because they lost everything, including their homes. “Many generations of people have lived on this land, their commitment to the island is very strong,” Sanders said.
The government wants to rebuild the island, but it will take a long time for everything to return to normal, especially for islanders. The first thing they will have to do is bring electricity and drinking water. Many wealthy people have donated millions of dollars, but the country still needs more. Some countries with better resources such as Puerto Rico or the Virgin Islands have done their best to help, but the road to recovery is long and will not be easy.
