Opinion: FSU Homecoming Review
posted by Westley Reaves Jr. | October 11, 2022 | In Arts and Culture, NewsFayetteville State University Homecoming has been off to the races and a lot of it has been fun while some of it, not so much. Having attended almost all the events overall, it has been enjoyable. However, there were some events that the school and student activities could have done a lot better on.
FSU Karaoke Night
This was pretty good fun. At first, no one wanted to come up and sing or rap. The event facilitators created a fun atmosphere and eventually students started to participate. They got the crowd hyped by playing some good dance music. They then hosted a mini competition, having the audience participate and decide which students performed the best—the winning students were then given a prize. Overall, good fun and wasn’t boring.
FSU Bowling Night
Now this event was hectic. First, it was a chilly night hitting just below 57 degrees. We got our wristbands and got on the buses and headed to the bowling alley, but when we got there, we had to wait in the cold for an hour to allow regular guests to finish their games and leave.
Now mind you, there were a lot of students who ended up attending. Consequently, I do not believe the event planners expected such a large turnout—this included students who came by their own vehicles as well.
This surprised me because during Welcome Week the event facilitators smartly planned two events at the same time—a movie screening and roller skating—which broke up the larger crowds and prevented people from just standing around in the cold. To be honest, they should have employed the same technique for Homecoming Week, as the split in attendance would have provided a more pleasant experience.
I personally did not get to bowl until two hours into the event. When I finally had the chance to bowl, it was with a random group of students, not even my own friend group. This made things awkward at first, but everyone tried to make the best of it and soon it was over.
I hope next time the event planners think thoroughly about how many students they expect to attend in order to properly prepare for the event. Also, I hope that in the future they do a multi-event like they did during Welcome Week to try to even out crowds so more students can have fun without frustration.
FSU Comedy Show
By far, this was the best event. Zoie, American internet personality and Wild ‘N Out star, was one of the guest hosts and really stole the show. He was very interactive with the crowd and they really seemed to enjoy his presence and funny moments.
We also had another star from the Wild ‘N Out, Tyler Chronicles, who had probably the best comedic performance of the show. He was also very interactive with the crowd and funny almost to an uncensored point. Comedian Ronnie Jordan was good as well and had his funny moments too. All in all, it was a very good show and a Homecoming Week event I was happy to attend.
