The worst possible outcome: Jets edition
posted by Trever Lloyd | September 18, 2023 | In SportsThe New York Jets suffering in quarterback purgatory continues. Since the retirement of Joe Namath in 1978, the team has been unable to find a signal caller that can be considered a long-term quarterback.
The reasons range from bad-to-inconsistent play or injuries.
The latter is what struck superstar quarterback Aaron Rodgers on September 11 against the hated division rival Buffalo Bills. On New York’s first drive, Rodgers dropped back for a routine pass on first and ten and was sacked by Bills’ defense end Leonard Floyd. At first everything seemed normal. Rodgers, himself, got up after being tackled and looked towards the sideline for his next play. Five seconds later, Rodgers laid back on the ground and had to be helped off the field to the sideline after he was carted to the locker room, where it was confirmed that the four-time MVP had suffered a torn Achilles.
This is an extremely disheartening blow to the Jets and their fans as the Rodgers acquisition was the highlight of the offseason. Rodgers was considered the missing piece keeping the team from the Super Bowl. The Jets have a suffocating defense and explosive offensive playmakers on the other side of the ball. All the team needed was a quarterback.
With Rodgers being out, third-year quarterback Zach Wilson came into the game, and Jets were able to win the game with a walk off touchdown in overtime. Wilson is expected to be the man leading the team for the rest of year.
