Homecoming Step Show is back and better than ever
posted by DorMiya Vance, Editor-In-Chief | October 19, 2021 | In Arts and CultureOn October 16, it was time for our Broncos to stomp the yard at the 2021 Homecoming Step Show. Our Greek organizations debuted their traditional strolls and steps through performances that anyone in the Capel Arena could relate to, even the judges.
First up on the stage were the poodles of Sigma Gamma Rho. Their theme was finding a team to compete in a big championship basketball game. The poodles incorporated props and basketball uniforms into their step routine. The most gratifying portion of their performance was the infamous SGRho Lean that got the alumni out of their seats and rooting for their home team.
The poodles cleared the stage and made way for the lovely ladies of Zeta Phi Beta. The Zetas let our Broncos know that it is spooky season, with their theme being “Nightmare on 1920,” featuring “Freddy Kruger.” The Zetas strolled and stepped to defeat Freddy and survive the “nightmare.” These lovely ladies kept the energy high in the arena, with all attendees amused by their performance. The Zetas ended their performance by defeating “Freddy” through some of their traditional steps.
As our sorority portion of the step show concluded, our fraternities were itching to touch the stage and perform for our Broncos. First up were the men of the Kappa Kappa Psi Band Fraternity. These honorary men took the spotlight with legendary strolls and chants that shook the arena. KK Psi alum joined in applause for the courageous men who took the stage.
Students and staff felt the energy as the men of the Alpha Phi Alpha took the stage with a more old-school theme. The Alphas incorporated well-known ‘90s R&B jams like “Ain’t Nobody” and “Brick House.” The Alphas paid homage to the lovely sororities by doing familiar strolls from the legacy. The Alphas concluded their performance by strolling to “Poison,” a popular song by Bel Biv DeVoe.
Before the last fraternity could touch the stage, alumni from Omega Psi Phi did their popular bark to let the crowd know that the Ques performance was the most anticipated of the night.
The Q Dogs went with a rebellious, NWA ‘80’s theme remixed to “Straight Outta Fayetteville, NC.’ The Ques let the Broncos who they were through chants, firm steps, and legendary barks. These men used their time on the stage to put on an actual step show for our Broncos. Dress in all black with elements of royal purple and old gold. These men were true “Ques With Attitude!” When their set came to a close, the Ques got on the “train” and told the crowd of Broncos to “make way” for the new Ques in town.
The step show concluded with judges choosing the best sorority and fraternity performance of the night. After much deliberation, the 2021 Homecoming Step Show winners were the lovely Zetas of Zeta Phi Beta Inc. and the big Q Dogs of Omega Psi Phi.
