Kid Cudi Pays Homage to Cobain, Farley During SNL Appearance
posted by Ford Bowles | April 16, 2021 | In Arts and CultureHip-hop pioneer, Kid Cudi appeared on Saturday Night Live this past weekend to perform two songs from his 2020 album “Man On The Moon III: The Chosen,” and turned some heads while doing so.
Cudi donned a floral dress while he gave a moving performance of his emotion-laden song “Sad People.” Many on social media made comparisons to his attire and one Kurt Cobain, frontman of the iconic band Nirvana, wore, saying they resembled one another. Others, of course, were shocked, and even in disbelief, that he did this.
Later that evening, Cudi personally thanked Cobain on his Instagram as one of his major influences and idols. Cudi also announced an upcoming Off-White fashion collection that the floral dress will be included in, which was the designer Virgil Abloh’s idea.
Cudi’s musical appearance came only days after the 27th anniversary of Cobain’s untimely and tragic death on April 5, 1994.
During Cudi’s first appearance of the night, performing his hit song “Tequila Shots,” he paid his respects to the late SNL star Chris Farley, wearing a shirt with his face on it underneath a green cardigan. This shirt also drew comparisons from people to one that Cobain wore during Nirvana’s unforgettable November 1993 MTV Unplugged set.
People were willing to go as far as to buy that same green cardigan Cobain had because someone purchased it at an auction for $334,000.
Furthermore, Cudi got a tattoo of Cobain over the past summer, showcasing the new ink through an Instagram post.
He also sampled one of Cobain’s songs, “Burn the Rain,” for the closing track of his 2018 collaborative project with Kanye West, Kids See Ghosts.
