When Do We Get a Break?
posted by Lorena Rico | November 22, 2021 | In OpinionRecently, it seems rare that many of us take time to shut off. Life is so fast-paced, and it is easy to experience feelings of exhaustion and burnout.
I have started to think about all the distractions our environments provide, and it has become easy to neglect taking time to sit with ourselves in peace and quiet.
Can you think of the last time you had a break? Have we forgotten the importance of shutting off our minds, unplugging, and attempting to be at peace?
Truthfully, I even wonder when I allow myself to have a break. I am guilty of waking up, checking my phone, or watching television at night when I am off work. This is still not considered a break due to my mind thinking about what I am reading online or watching. Our minds are always at work. Some of us are constantly moving from the time we wake up until the time we go to sleep, and some of us do not have a choice.
There are many benefits in giving ourselves a break. Even taking ten to thirty minutes out of the day just to breathe and disconnect can release built up tension and stress. We are likely to take on tasks with a more positive attitude if we take breaks for our own wellbeing.
Taking a step back should never be seen as a distraction. If we are not in control over when we take a break, people and events will continue to occupy our time and energy with no end in sight.
