¿Qué significa ser hispano? (What does it mean to be Hispanic?)

En estas convivencias se comparte una gran variedad de lecciones aprendidas y demostradas que forman parte de la formación social, moral y espiritual de los miembros de la cultura. Como parte de la celebración del mes de la hispanidad se entrevistó a grupo de individuos hispanos sobre su concepto personal de su identidad cultural. A cada participante se le hizo la misma pregunta: ¿Qué significa para ti ser hispano/a? Las respuestas, aunque variadas, tenían un elemento común: orgullo.
What does it mean to be Hispanic?
Our Hispanic heritage represents the traditions, customs, traits, and feelings transmitted by living with relatives, friends and acquaintances and are established and inherited through generations. In family gatherings one shares a variety of lessons learned and demonstrated as part of the social, moral and spiritual formation of the members of the culture. As part of the celebration of Hispanic Heritage Month a group of Hispanic individuals was interviewed about their personal concept of their cultural identity. Each participant was asked the same question: What does it mean to you to be Hispanic? The answers, though varied, had a common element: pride.

For me, being Hispanic is something I carry in my heart. It’s something that makes me feel very proud, and to let everyone in the United States know where I come from. To follow our roots, our culture is very important, and not be ashamed of anything because Hispanics are here to stay and to succeed. |

Being Hispanic growing up in the United States means having been given the opportunity to learn about different cultures and it gives me the opportunity to teach my peers and my friends about how I was raised and what differences I had growing up then what they did.

Being Hispanic is to transmit it to my children through traditions, meals, stories and giving them a sense of origin that allows them to see their position in the chain of succession and responsibility. To others do I transmit this by sharing experiences and cultural knowledge that is not common here in this country. |

Siendo hispana me siento muy orgullosa porque tengo el beneficio de conocer dos idiomas. Puedo enseñar el idioma español en toda su capacidad. También puedo cocinar comidas latinas de diferentes países latinoamericanos. Comparto mis conocimientos con otras personas hispanas de otros países sin sentir prejuicios. Participo en muchas actividades latinas, especialmente de mi país. |
Being Hispanic, I am very proud because I have the benefit of knowing two languages. I can teach the Spanish language at full capacity. I can also cook Hispanic foods from different Latin American countries. I share my knowledge with other Hispanic people from other countries without feeling prejudiced. I participated in many Hispanic activities, especially in those of my country. |
