Women’s Basketball Hold Off Bluefield State In CIAA Quarterfinal
posted by Zaire Jones | March 3, 2024 | In SportsThe Fayetteville State University women’s basketball team held it down again with another win. They advanced to the Round of 32, defeating Bluefield State College, 59-45.
Going into the CIAA Tournament, the Broncos held one of the best records at 24-2 giving them one of the 1st seeds.
The game started off sluggish for both the Broncos and Bluefield State. The Broncos only made 4 of their 16 field goals attempted. FSU only attempted three 3-pointers and none were able to fall.
It was not easy for the underdog Bluefield State either. Bluefield was trigger-happy, shooting seven 3-pointerss in the quarter only making one. Overall, Bluefield State were 3-14 shooting but still managed to have a 1-point lead at the end of the first period.
Then in the second quarter, the switch flipped for the Broncos and the game. They stuck with playing great defense, only allowing 4 points in the quarter. FSU’s 11 steals would propel them to getting more opportunities to score. The shots were starting to fall for the Broncos as 9 of their 16 points came from the 3-point line.
In the second half, the Broncos were able to hold off a comeback by Bluefield State. Bluefield were able to get to the free throw to minimize the Broncos lead towards the end of the third quarter. That momentum would carry into the fourth as the lead for the Broncos was in single digits. The Broncos were able to finish the job by getting to the free throw line making 8 of the 13 free throws.
Senior Aniylah Bryant was the leading scorer with 25 points along with four steals and seven rebounds. The women faced the 2-seed Virginia State University in the Round of 32 and won to send them to the championship game.
